When a Painting Is Finished
Share
Knowing when to stop is one of the most difficult parts of painting.
A painting does not announce its completion. There is no clear signal, no final gesture that declares it done. Instead, finishing arrives gradually — through attention rather than decision.
I know a painting is finished when it no longer asks anything of me. When additional marks would add noise rather than clarity. When the surface feels settled and self-contained.

Stopping is an act of restraint. It requires trusting what is already present and resisting the urge to overwork. In this way, finishing a painting becomes an exercise in listening.
