Ascent

There are moments beneath the surface when the light above feels almost close enough to touch.

The water moves in shifting patterns, opening and closing around the sky as delicate rays reach down into the blue. Below, there is stillness; above, the promise of air, warmth and return.

Ascent was inspired by that upward pull.

Rather than depicting a literal journey to the surface, the painting explores the feeling of moving towards light after a period of darkness or uncertainty. Built slowly through layers of oil paint, deep blues rise into luminous whites and softened turquoise, drawing the eye upward and creating a sense of quiet momentum.

It is a painting about hope, renewal and the instinct to keep moving towards what restores us.

Living With Ascent

From the Artist

I have always been fascinated by the view from beneath the water—the way the surface becomes a moving boundary between two worlds. Light breaks through in fragments, constantly shifting and reforming, offering a glimpse of what lies beyond.

While painting Ascent, I began to think about the moments in life when we feel ourselves slowly returning—towards clarity, hope or a renewed sense of self.

For me, this painting is about that movement. Not a sudden transformation, but a gradual rising: the quiet decision to keep reaching for the light.
