Distance

There is comfort in looking towards the horizon.

The farther our gaze travels across the sea, the quieter our thoughts seem to become. Distance has a way of softening the edges of everyday life, creating space for reflection and reminding us that beyond what we can see lies endless possibility.

Distance was inspired by that feeling.

Rather than capturing a particular coastline or moment in time, the painting explores the quiet relationship between sea, sky and memory. Through layers of luminous oil paint and subtle transitions of colour, it invites the viewer to pause, breathe and experience the calm that comes from looking beyond the immediate and towards something greater.

It is a painting about perspective, openness and the quiet beauty found in simply looking out to sea.

Soft, atmospheric and deeply calming, Distance brings a sense of openness into the home. As daylight moves across its textured surface, delicate layers of colour and light emerge, allowing the painting to change gently throughout the day and with the passing seasons.

Some of my favourite moments by the sea are spent doing nothing at all.

Simply standing still and looking towards the horizon until thoughts begin to settle and time seems to slow. The further the eye travels, the quieter the mind becomes.

When I painted Distance, I wanted to preserve that feeling. Not the view itself, but the sense of perspective that the sea so generously offers—the reminder that there is beauty in open space, comfort in stillness and freedom in allowing ourselves to simply pause and look.

My hope is that Distance becomes a quiet sanctuary within the home—a painting that offers perspective, invites stillness and gently reminds us that the horizon has always been a place of hope, possibility and return.
