Some landscapes carry the memory of both people and nature.

Standing at Pulpit Rock on the Isle of Portland, it is impossible not to feel the quiet conversation between the two. Creadted by human hands from Portland stone and left overlooking the sea, it now stands as though it has always belonged there, weathered by salt air, surrounded by light and embraced by the endless rhythm of the tide.

Salt and Stone was inspired by that meeting of worlds.

It is a reflection on the relationship between permanence and change, where solid rock meets moving water and human history becomes woven into the natural landscape. Through luminous layers of oil paint and atmospheric colour, the painting captures not simply a place, but a feeling of quiet endurance and timeless connection to the coast.

It is a reminder that nature has a remarkable way of reclaiming, softening and transforming everything it touches.

Living With Salt and Stone

Calm, atmospheric and quietly grounding, Salt and Stone brings a sense of permanence and openness into the home. As natural daylight moves across its textured surface, delicate layers of colour and light emerge, revealing subtle shifts in atmosphere throughout the day.

Its natural palette complements interiors inspired by wood, linen, stone and coastal light, creating a feeling of understated elegance and quiet connection with the landscape.

It is a painting that anchors a room with calm and character.

From the Artist

I have always been fascinated by places where human history and the natural world quietly coexist.

Pulpit Rock is one of those places. Created through industry yet now embraced by the sea, it feels less like a monument and more like part of the landscape itself. Wind, salt and changing light have softened its story, allowing it to become something timeless.

When I painted Salt and Stone, I wanted to capture that quiet harmony—the meeting of permanence and movement, of craftsmanship and nature, and the enduring sense of peace that the Dorset coastline offers to those who pause long enough to look.

For me, it is a painting about belonging to the landscape, whatever our story may be.

My hope is that Salt and Stone becomes a quiet place of reflection within the home—a painting that brings together the enduring beauty of the Dorset coast, the craftsmanship of those who shaped it and the timeless rhythm of the sea that continues to breathe life into it every day.
