The Space Between

Beneath the surface, there are moments when the world feels suspended between one breath and the next.

Light filters through moving water, bubbles drift slowly upwards and the boundary above seems both close and impossibly distant. For a brief moment, there is no past or future—only the quiet space between holding on and letting go.

The Space Between was inspired by that pause.

Rather than depicting a particular place, the painting explores the delicate threshold between stillness and movement, depth and air, surrender and return. Built gradually through layers of oil paint, luminous turquoise deepens across the canvas while rising bubbles and softened shafts of light draw the eye towards the surface.

It invites the viewer to slow down, breathe and rest within the uncertainty of the moment before everything changes.

I have always been fascinated by the moment beneath the water when everything seems briefly suspended. The surface is moving, bubbles are rising and yet there is an extraordinary sense of stillness below.

It feels like being caught between two worlds—not quite within the depths, but not yet returned to the air.

The Space Between is my attempt to capture that feeling. For me, it represents the pauses in life when we have left something behind but have not yet arrived at what comes next.

Those moments can feel uncertain, but they can also hold possibility. Sometimes the space between is not empty at all—it is where change quietly begins.
