How Paintings and Art Can Impact Your Mood

How Paintings and Art Can Impact Your Mood

It has been a topic of discussion for many years, but can art really influence the way you feel? Can your mood be defined by what you see? Absolutely.
An abundance of studies, psychological research and proven testing has shown that paintings and wall art can and does influence how you feel. It has a profound impact on your emotions and ultimately your well-being. Knowing this, the importance of picking the right painting for you makes it all the more important.

So how does it work?
Viewing painting and wall art can lead to feelings of relaxation and calm. As a creative outlet it can inspire- triggering positive energies and emotions. This, in turn, helps to reduce stress, increase endorphins and dopamine and leave us feeling good.
Art comes from creativity, a freeing state whereby emitting similar emotions. When you feel stressed just looking at artwork can release tension and create a sense of well-being.
Colour!
The colours within a painting or wall art play a significant part in mood enhancement. It's not to say that you need bright vibrant colours all over the house- neutrals can also enhance our mood. But there is a delicate balance of colour combinations that need to be understood. For example, if your room is neutral, and you add a blue or green calm seascape- you will evoke serenity, a connection with nature, a sense of freedom, thus releasing tension. However, if you have a dark grey room and you add black, or dark grey abstracts to the wall, this can mean that there is not enough positive energy in the room and feelings of calm and serenity are unachievable.
Ultimately, you need to choose a painting or a piece of artwork that feels right for you. Do you feel a sense of connection with a painting? Does a particular seascape make you feel a little brighter? Or perhaps the deep greens and blues of an abstract seems to make you smile? Art is personal. While artists like myself can advise you of what may look great in a certain space, if you feel it then it must be true.
Colour? What does it mean?
Lets have a look at colour... Its thought that most colours have positive and negative connotations. This is true for some, but colours are like art- they are personal too. I may feel that red is the colour for danger and therefore I would stay away from red paintings. Yet you may love red and it resonates as romance to you.
Below I have a list of some colours that have well know connotations of emotion attached to them...
Blue: calm, serene, free, relaxed, secure, reliable, melancholy
Green: rebirth, nature, peace, vitality, wealth, envy, greed
Yellow: hope, warmth, laughter, happiness, positivity, fear, anxiety
Red: love, romance, passion, sexuality, excitement, danger, anger
Pink: femininity, innosence, peace, playfulness, warmth
Purple: creativity, mystery, nostalgia, nobility, stability, upset
Black: Life, rebirth, luxury, sadness, serious

Make it your haven!
If you surround yourself with art that makes you feel good, that uplifts and inspires, then you will feel the effects on your daily life. Paintings and wall art can contribute to your happiness and well-being. We live in such a busy world, with modern technology, concrete and chaos. Our home is the one place we can go, shut the world out and just breathe. But if your home does not reflect who you are then it will impact your emotions. Finding art that resonates with you can lift your emotions and leave you feeling good.

Art
Art is a communication, from artist to audience. Its subject matter is emotion- an energy that is emitted through imagery, communicating this emotion through to you.

Me
My paintings stem from positivity and well-being. I paint to feel good, to express myself and to share that good feeling with you. I use colours and combinations, not only because they feel right, but because I know they have positive attributes. My art is inspired by nature. My rural surroundings and coastal living is poured into my art to share the peace that comes with living near nature.
Take a look at my nature inspired abstracts here and see if any of them speak to you. Alternatively, if you love the sea as much as I do, take a look at my seascapes here.

You
I know that art has to feel personal for you in order to buy it. That is the main reason that I undertake commissions. If you have a photo of a beach you love, or an idea of an abstract piece that you would like to have in your home, or perhaps you like one of my paintings but would prefer different colours or sizes, then please click here and get in touch. I would be more than happy to have a chat and see if we can figure it out together.
