About
Artist's Statement
I never meant to sell my art. It began as an expression of myself, a release, but also a burning passion I have had from childhood. I worked in broadcast media for years before becoming a full time artist. It was only when a friend asked me to create a painting for her new home that I began to believe that perhaps my work may resonate with others.
Slowly but surely I was commissioned for more and more paintings. The most common feedback I received was how much 'life' my art brought to them, feelings of happiness, strength and positivity. It really took me aback. I never realised that people would feel so much.
20 years later, here I am. Older, sometimes wiser, but still as passionate about art today as I was when I began.
My hope is to connect with others, help people to feel inspired, uplifted and empowered. I create atmospheric seas and dramatic skies to promote positive energies and strength, which will transmit into their space.
Why Do I Paint?
Creating art is not just about talent. It is about the 'why'. Each artist has a different reason as to why they create what they create, whether it be abstracts, figurative or landscapes. I have dabbled in all of the above. I still do. But my real passion is the sea.
I have suffered in my life. I have felt trapped, lost and alone. I have been hurt severely by those that I loved, and I have felt utter exhaustion, desperation and defeat.
I could have allowed these bad things to swallow me whole. I won't lie, I came close once or twice.... but all of these things have shaped me. They have made me who I am today. While they do not define me, they have had an impact.
In my darkest days I would find myself yearning for the sea. I lost count of the times I drove for hours to be near it. Why the sea? Well, this is the best part...
To me, the sea is emotion. It ebbs and flows, just as our own feelings do.... but there are no walls to contain it. It is free, endless and eternal. It never stops or gives up. The sea can be so beautiful, whether it laps calmly against the shore, or creates thunderous waves. It is natural, powerful, full of life and free. All of things that I wanted to be.... that is my connection with the sea... And that is what I hope to offer you.
A little about Magda...
Born in 80's Dublin, Ireland, Magda played by the coast and remembers the sea was a big part of her childhood. At the age of 4 her family moved to Chelsea in London, and the sea became a distant memory.
Magda began to paint over 20 years ago, while she continued a career in broadcast media. She travelled the globe, worked alongside some of the biggest musicians in the world, but the call back to the sea became too loud for her to ignore.
After some soul searching Magda realised that her passion had been with her all along and began to paint professionally. Starting off with commissions, Magda grew a base of collectors and went on to publish her first lone collection in 2023 which sold out in weeks.
Magda now lives with her family in South West England with a view of the sea from her studio.
My Process
All of my initial ideas are sketched in my notepad which are then edited and adapted until it feels right.
I often use clay to create added texture and enhance my visions. I paint directly onto canvas using a collection of tools, such as brushes, palette knives, and sponges, and begin with base layers, adding each layer methodically, to create depth and unity.
I work mostly with Oils, depending on my vision. Oils, while they can take some time to dry and require a level of technical skill, the results are so much more rewarding. The colours are deep, the blending abilities allow for artistic expression and the finish is exquisite.
